Small Game Fishing in Mauritius: A Relaxed Morning Just Outside the Reef

Big game fishing in Mauritius is famous, but it means long hours far offshore. Small game fishing is the relaxed alternative: shorter trips close to the coast, light rods, and a good chance of catching something for everyone on board, including children.

How it works

The boat leaves Mahébourg and heads to spots around the reef and just beyond it. Your skipper sets up the rods, shows you how to hold and reel, and picks the technique for the day: trolling slowly behind the boat or fishing at anchor. All equipment is provided.

What bites depends on the season, the tide and luck. That is half the fun. The skipper knows the local spots and moves the boat if things are quiet.

Who is it for?

Complete beginners, families with children, and keen anglers who want a light session. Nobody has to fish: friends who prefer to swim or sunbathe still enjoy the ride and the views of the coast.

Combine fishing with the lagoon

Small game fishing pairs well with a lagoon programme: fish in the morning, then snorkel or relax on an island. Ask us to combine it with a private trip or see current options on our experiences page.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a fishing licence in Mauritius?

No personal licence is needed when you fish with a licensed boat operator. Equipment is provided.

Is small game fishing suitable for kids?

Yes. It happens close to the coast with light rods, and children love reeling in their first fish.

What is the difference between small game and big game fishing?

Big game fishing targets large species far offshore over several hours. Small game fishing stays closer to the coast with lighter gear, so it is shorter, calmer and easier for beginners.
