Mahébourg is the main town of the south-east coast, on the shore of Grand Port bay and close to the international airport. Founded in the early 1800s under French rule and named after the governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais, it is quieter and more local than the resort areas of the north. It is also where many of the best lagoon trips start.
1. Walk the waterfront at Pointe des Régates
The seafront promenade looks over the bay, with fishing boats, the islands on the horizon and the Lion Mountain behind the town. Pointe des Régates is where Southeast Cruises boats depart, and where you meet Captain Pascal before your trip.
2. The Monday market
Every Monday the town fills with a big market: fruit, vegetables, spices, textiles and street food such as dholl puri, gateaux piments and samosas. Go early, before the heat.
3. National History Museum
In a colonial house just outside the centre, the museum covers the island's Dutch, French and British periods, including relics from the 1810 Battle of Grand Port.
4. Blue Bay and the marine park
A few minutes south, Blue Bay has one of the island's most beautiful public beaches and a protected marine park with coral gardens. Our snorkeling guide explains how to see the reef with respect.
5. Get out on the lagoon
The real reason to come to Mahébourg is the lagoon: the GRSE waterfall, Île aux Cerfs, the lighthouse island and Île aux Aigrettes are all reachable by speedboat in a single day.
