Île aux Aigrettes: The Island Nature Reserve off Mahébourg

Just off Mahébourg lies Île aux Aigrettes, a small coral island that has become one of the most important conservation sites in the Indian Ocean. It protects one of the last remnants of the dry coastal forest that once covered this part of Mauritius.

Why the island matters

The island is managed by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation. Over decades, invasive plants were cleared and native species brought back. Today it is home to rare birds such as the pink pigeon and the Mauritius olive white-eye, reptiles such as Telfair's skink, and Aldabra giant tortoises that roam freely and help the forest regenerate.

Visiting the reserve

Walking on the island is only possible with the foundation's own guided tours, which protect the habitat. On a lagoon trip with Southeast Cruises, you see Île aux Aigrettes from the water: our half-day route passes the island, and we offer sunset cocktails nearby, one of the most peaceful moments you can have on the south-east coast.

The lagoon around it

The shallow waters between Île aux Aigrettes, Blue Bay and Île aux Vacoas are some of the clearest in Mauritius, with good snorkeling on the reef. Please follow the basic rules in our snorkeling guide: no touching coral, no feeding fish.
