Water Skiing in Mauritius: Learning on the Flat South-East Lagoon

The lagoon of south-east Mauritius is wide, protected by the reef and often glassy in the morning: perfect conditions for water skiing. Whether you have never stood on skis or you want to carve some fast turns, a session behind the boat is one of the most fun hours you can spend on holiday.

What a session looks like

Your skipper picks a calm, open stretch of water away from swimmers. You get a short briefing on the boat: how to hold the rope, how to sit back in the water and let the boat pull you up, and the hand signals for faster, slower and stop. Then you jump in with a life jacket, and the boat pulls gently until you stand.

Most beginners stand within a few tries. Once you are up, the skipper adjusts the speed to your level.

Who can try it?

Teenagers and adults in reasonable health, swimmers or not, since you always wear a life jacket. Experienced skiers can ask for higher speeds or a board.

When is it best?

Mornings are usually calmest. In winter the trade winds can ruffle the water in the afternoon, so we plan skiing early in the day. See our seasonal guide.

Combine it with a lagoon day

Water skiing is available as a standalone activity or on top of a private trip. Many groups mix it with snorkeling and a stop at Île aux Cerfs. Check current options on our experiences page.

Frequently asked questions

Can beginners water ski in Mauritius?

Yes. The flat, reef-protected lagoon of the south-east is ideal for first-timers, and the skipper gives a full briefing before you start.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to water ski?

No. You wear a life jacket the whole time and the boat circles back to you immediately after a fall.
