The Grande Rivière Sud-Est (GRSE) is the longest river in Mauritius. It ends on the east coast, opposite Île aux Cerfs, and just before it meets the sea it drops over a wall of black basalt into a narrow gorge. There is no road to the foot of the falls. The only way to see them up close is by boat.
The ride up the river
Leaving the turquoise lagoon, the speedboat slows down and enters the river mouth. The water turns deep green, the banks close in with mangroves and tropical forest, and the noise of the falls grows. Skippers bring the boat as close as the current safely allows, so you can take photos with the waterfall right behind you.
The visit lasts long enough for photos and a good look at the gorge. Swimming at the foot of the falls is not part of the stop, because the current is strong.
Best time to see the falls
The waterfall is at its most powerful after rain, so the wetter summer months (roughly December to April) usually give the biggest flow. In the drier months it is calmer but still very photogenic. Morning light is the softest for photos, and our seasonal guide explains how weather shapes the lagoon.
How to include GRSE in your day
The waterfall is part of our full-day private trip from Mahébourg, which also covers Île aux Cerfs, the lighthouse island, snorkeling and a BBQ lunch. You can read a wider guide to waterfalls in Mauritius too.
Frequently asked questions
Can you swim at the GRSE waterfall?
No. The current at the foot of the falls is strong, so the visit is from the boat. Swimming happens later at Île aux Cerfs and the snorkeling stops.
Can you reach the GRSE waterfall by car?
There is a viewpoint inland, but the foot of the falls in the gorge is only reachable by boat from the river mouth near Île aux Cerfs.
Is the river trip safe for children?
Yes. The boat moves slowly on the river, everyone wears or has a life jacket, and the skipper keeps a safe distance from the falls.
