When Is the Best Time for a Boat Trip in Mauritius? A Month-by-Month View

Boat trips run all year in Mauritius. The lagoon in the south-east is protected by a long barrier reef, so even on breezy days the water inside stays swimmable. Still, the season does change the feel of the day. Here is what to expect.

Summer: November to April

Hot, humid and the warmest water of the year, often around 27 to 29 °C. The sea is usually calmer and the colours are at their most intense. Short tropical showers pass quickly. This is also the cyclone season, most active from January to March. Cyclones are rare in any given week, and when one is forecast all boats stay in port. We always reschedule for weather, at no cost.

Winter: May to October

Cooler and drier, with pleasant air temperatures in the mid-20s. The south-east trade winds are stronger in these months, which can make the open water choppier. Inside the reef it stays comfortable, and the sunny, clear days give excellent visibility for snorkeling. Bring a light layer for the ride back.

Morning or afternoon?

Mornings are usually calmer, with the softest light for photos. That is why our full day starts at 09:30 and our half day has a morning slot (09:30 to 12:30). The afternoon half day (13:00 to 16:00) suits late risers and ends with golden light over the lagoon.

Tides matter too

Sandbanks and shallow snorkeling spots depend on the tide. Captain Pascal checks tide and wind every morning and adjusts the order of the stops. Some landings, such as the Île aux Flamants sandbank, are only possible on the right day, so we never promise them in advance.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month for a boat trip in Mauritius?

Every month works. For the warmest water choose November to April; for dry, sunny days with good visibility choose September to November.

What happens if the weather is bad on my date?

If wind or rain makes the trip unsafe or unpleasant, we contact you to move to another day. You are not charged for a trip we cancel for weather.

Is the sea rough in Mauritius in July?

The open sea can be choppy in winter because of the trade winds, but the south-east lagoon inside the reef stays comfortable for swimming and snorkeling on most days.
